It's a....

Our baby is a boy!!! I felt like he was a boy all along! (It looks like a lot of you felt that way, too!)It was so overwhelming to see our little baby on the screen and find out that he is a boy and immediately think about how Thomas would be/is so happy! (I know he would be happy with a girl, too--but we are getting to experience both and that is a blessing too!) I know our little one will be just like his amazing daddy-loving and living life to the fullest. I can't wait to tell him all about his dad. Where would I start?? That's for another blog post...
I am a little anxious about raising a boy, but he has so many great male role models in his life that I know we will be taken care of. My new friend, Tara, who also lost her husband wrote on her blog about how her little boy has the best father ever in our Lord and He knew of the plan for us. Sometimes thinking about that makes me feel a little better, but I still have days where I just cannot believe this is the life He wanted me to live, without Thomas. I have so much more to say, soon, but I'm exhausted and need to sleep. I would appreciate continued prayers, as trusting as I am that God is in control of our little baby's life, I am still nervous and ready to hear our little heartbeat again. Thank you all for your continued support, it is helping me to stay strong!

  11. When I read that you are a little anxious about having a boy, you brought me back to my own ultrasound when I fiirst learned I was having a boy. My daugher was about 2 1/2 yrs when we found out she would have a little brother. I had a lot of anxiety about it. Having 'been there, done that', I was comfortable raising a girl and the whole 'girl expierence'. But a boy was outside my comfort zone -- what kind of a "boy mom" would I be? could I keep up with all that kinetic engery? what if he didn't want to sit still long enough to talk to me like my daughter did? can I relate to the 'boy' experience, having not lived it myself? I even read books like "The Wonder of Boys" to get myself comfortable with the idea of raising him.

Well, once he arrived, all those anxieties melted away and I felt so silly for harboring them in the first place. In fact, I was completely caught off-guard by my emotions. My motherly feelings of love for him seem like they come from a completely different place than my feelings for my daughter, and I had not expected that. I don't know how to say this without it sounding weird, but it's almost like having a little crush on him, in a completley maternal way. I really, finally 'get' that mother-son thing. It is very powerful.

I used to feel sorry for mothers who only had boys and never got to experience the 'mother-daughter' bond with their own little girls. But, after having my boy, I no longer feel that way. In fact, I now feel sorry for mothers who have only daughters, because they have no idea what they are missing.

I am so glad you will get to experience this blessing, which will be made even more special for you since losing Thomas. Do not be anxious at all about being an amazing mother to your boy -- but do be prepared to be completely knocked out and blown away by your love for him.

  26. I don't know you, but I was at Fayetteville with Julie Harmon in college and I found your blog through her's. I found out what happened to Thomas when Scott Karnes sent an email to the RFCs. I just want to say how much reading your story has impressed me. Your faith has strengthened mine and even though we've never met, I'm thankful for you and pray for you and your family. Congratulations on your little boy.

  29. Congratulations, Bonnie!! We are so happy for you!! Boys are so much fun. I have to admit that I was a little nervous when Xander was born because I hadn't been around many little boys. On both sides of the family, there have been an abundance of girls!! My nervousness quickly went away once I held him in my arms. Xander is Mommy's little man and is so precious!! We enjoy him everyday!! I'm so thrilled for you to enjoy the experience of being a mom to a boy as well as precious Caroline. Jeff and I continue to pray for you, Caroline, and your baby boy!!

  30. Congratulations on having a son! I had a girl first and then had a boy. It has been nice to have one of each. As someone else stated, there is just as special a bond between mother and son as there is between mother and daughter if not stronger! Caroline will be a great big sister. I'm sure that he will have many of those wonderful qualities that Thomas had. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Congrats on having a baby boy! May God fill you with peace and give you strength to endure the hard days.

Hugs to you and your precious little girl,

  37. Yeah for boys! We're kind of fond of them. No worries Bonnie, I couldn't see myself as a boy mom and now I'm playing soccer with the best of them (3 year olds that is). What a blessing. Let me know when you have a name and colors picked out. I would love to help you decorate his room! Congratulations!

  53. I don't know you or your family, but I live in NWA, heard of your situation on the news, and read about you on Leah Smith's blog. Even being so far removed from the situation, it still crosses my mind and I grieve for you. I want you to know that people will not forget about you, your family, or your loss. It appears that your husband really lived for each day and made an impact on others' lives. Congratulations on the news of a baby boy. He will be adorable.
Your posts about music have interested me. I am a music teacher and this verse says a lot!
Proverbs 25:20 Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. (NIV)
What a perspective on sadness and music. That verse says it all.
    I will pray for you.
